A small circulation publication of original text and images.
In a zine, you can write about whatever you want, however you want, and use whichever creative method of visual expression to complement it.
The rule is that there are no rules!
A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is a glorious mixture of art, words, story and emotion. Artists use zines to speak creatively about whatever they want to. They can be full colour or black and white, be drawn, painted, a collage of stickers and prints or anything in between. They can be glued together, sewn, taped or exist in unbound forms. They might tell a story, be journalistic, or they might be completely abstract. In a zine, you can write about whatever you want, however you want, and use whichever creative method of visual expression to complement it.
Think about a topic you might like to cover – it might be a story you could cut down to the bare essentials, it might be a train of thought you think others might appreciate. You might write something non-fiction. It’s up to you!
So get creative with your words and try something new! Your writer’s brain will love you for it.
Well, it’s your zine, of course! Take pictures of the pages or take a video of yourself flipping through it. You could do a video of yourself reading it aloud!
Or you can mail it in to Pen and Fable headquarters (don’t worry, if you tell me your address, I promise I’ll mail it back!)
